The New York Center for the Alexander Technique: Laurie Kline and Michael Ostrow

The New York Center for the Alexander Technique was founded in 1990. We are committed to teaching the principles and practices of the Technique for achieving higher levels of health and functioning. Laurie Kline and Michael Ostrow are certified by both the American (AmSAT*) and English (STAT**) certifying organizations, and have been teaching the Technique since 1990. Laurie and Michael trained with Thomas Lemens, a graduate of Patrick MacDonald's training class. They have over 2,800 hours of training and have done extensive post-graduate work with many of the most experienced teachers of the Technique. They have taught workshops at several hospitals in New York such as the Hospital for Special Surgery, Lenox Hill Hospital, and Mount Sinai Hospital, as well as at corporations such as the New York Times and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As part of their training, they studied dressage, and have worked with horseback riders both in the United States and Germany. They have also studied with the renowned breathing and voice expert Carl Stough, and have both been authorized to teach his work. They incorporate his understanding of breathing coordination into their work.

Laurie Kline
Laurie Kline graduated from North Carolina School of the Arts, and worked as a professional dancer for 20 years. Wanting to further explore movement at a deeper and more fundamental level, she trained as a teacher in the Alexander Technique. Her previous experience as a professional dancer uniquely qualifies her to work with performing artists and athletes. But she has also worked with a wide variety of clients, from office workers with problems sitting at their computers, to people suffering from chronic pain, to people interested in self-improvement and self-exploration.

Laurie has been certified by the Open Focus biofeedback Center in Princeton New Jersey. By integrating the biofeedback open focus with the Alexander Technique teaching practice Laurie has been able to help speed up the practice of learning the Alexander Technique. She addressed the way people attend to themselves while learning to give themselves the directions necessary to changing habitual patterns.

In addition to her private practice she has also worked with musicians at Wilkes-Barre College and at Diller-Quaile Music School in Manhattan. She has studied extensively with Carl Stough, the renowned breathing and voice instructor, and has been authorized by him to teach his work.

Michael Ostrow
Michael Ostrow has been teaching the Alexander Technique since 1990, and is certified by both AmSAT and STAT. He worked extensively with many of the most experienced Alexander Technique teachers both during training and after graduating.

Mr. Ostrow assisted in an Alexander Technique teacher training class at the Institute for the Alexander Technique training class from 1995 to 2001, where he also taught anatomy and voice to the trainees. He was chair of the Training Approval Committee for five years, the committee responsible for evaluating and maintaining the standards for training classes in United States. He is now co-director with Thom Lemens of a training class in New York City..

Mr. Ostrow studied with a number of voice teachers during his training and afterwards, including the renowned breathing and voice expert Carl Stough, who authorized him to teach his work. Over these years of experience, Mr. Ostrow developed a unique approach, enabling him to help clients with a variety of voice and breathing issues.

Before discovering the Alexander Technique, his interest in philosophy and "mind-body" disciplines led him to study Zen Buddhism for a number of years after getting a BA in philosophy. But these approaches lacked what Alexander called “the bridge between theory and practice.” Finally, in the Alexander Technique he discovered a revolutionary yet practical approach to freeing people from sub-conscious ways of reacting and moving so they can live a more poised and mindful life. It has remained his inspiration and central focus since then.

Mr. Ostrow also studied classical piano — albeit without the benefit of the Alexander Technique. After learning the Alexander Technique, he discovered how to play with less tension and more awareness and sensitivity, enabling him to better understand and serve the needs of musicians. He now teaches regular workshops at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
